Top 5 Link Building Mistakes You Should Avoid

Any search engine optimization Guru will tell you that building backlink is a very important element to the success of your internet marketing campaign. However, what makes your SEO campaign successful is the quality of your backlinks. Some of the common link building mistakes are made unknowingly and therefore we thought it is proper to shed light on the most common link building mistakes you need to avoid at all cost.

Selling or buying links

Before Google rolled out a number of updates, buying and selling of links with the aim of ranking higher on Google was a common practice. However, this is no longer feasible and could see your website banned or delisted. Avoid at all cost making the mistake of buying links with the hope of getting backlinks as Google looks at it as spamming. Instead, focus on getting natural links. Rather than buying links, focus on creating high-quality content, guest posts on high authority sites and backlink to your website.

Avoid linking to sites deemed to have a very bad reputation

Sites containing duplicate content, pornographic sites, spam sites and any other kinds of illegal sites should never be linked to. Irrespective of how you deem the popular the site is, avoid linking to sites with questionable reputations. Always ensure that you link to high authority quality sites with a very good reputation. The reverse is also true and you should never accept backlinks from spam sites or sites that are deemed to have bad reputation.

Getting a lot of backlinks from niche sites not related to yours

While the allure to get backlinks can be quite irresistible, make sure that the backlinks you get are from sites in the same niche as yours. Unrelated backlinks have no impact to your PR and are deemed to carry very low weight in so far as the ranking of your website is concerned.

Avoid placing your link to a site with tons of links

Avoid placing your link in a website that has thousands of other comments with links placed on them. Placing a link is all about getting enough exposure and increasing your chances of the same link being clicked by others. However, if the same link is lost in a thousand other links, then the whole intent of a backlink is lost. As such, purpose to place your link in a site that has good PR and few links.

Embarking on building lots of links in a short period of time

Link building is only useful to your site if done systematically and done in the correct way. In essence, trying to build numerous links within a very short period of time will hurt your website. Search engines would look at it as spamming or see your website as a link farm which inadvertently lead to being banned or delisted. Of course, this is something that you would not want to happen to your site. A city cannot be built in a day and therefore you should start slow and steadily work your way up.
