Off-site vs on-site SEO – What’s the difference?

January 2, 2018 By Team Impossible Leave a Comment

SEO, SEO Malaysia

Basically, an on-site Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is what you do on your site to improve rankings whereas an off-site SEO is what you do on other sites to improve your search engine rankings.

On-Site SEO
You may have a fantastic website with beautiful and intuitive designs, images and an attractive background, but to get it ranked well on search engine results, you need to see your site as how a search engine crawler would see it. This means that you should consider the coding of your website. When a search engine spider or crawler skims over your website, they don’t look at the images or designs, instead, they see the filenames of images.

Hence, you should look at your site in terms of the code and how that code can be optimised from a search engine’s perspective. Some really important factors when looking at your code in your on-site optimisation are your domain name, your title tag, your meta description, your header tags, your rich media files such as videos or images and the alternate tags for such files. You want to have those optimised with keywords and all this can be done through on-site SEO.

An on-site SEO can be classified into two categories: basic on-page SEO, and in-depth on-site SEO. Basic on-page SEO implies that it uses your keywords in the title, URL, headline, image alternate tags, page copy, and metadata of your site. In case you are using the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin, you will be able to use it for tracking the usage of your keywords. You can just scroll down once in your post editor and you will see all the conditions that you need to keep in mind for proper on-site SEO for every single WordPress post.

On the other hand, In-depth on-site SEO makes sure that you don’t have broken links; the title and metadata are in good working order; your URL structure is proper, and you don’t have broken images. You can install plug-ins to take care of broken links and images within your site. You may also want to use other software or services to get to know about your in-depth on-page SEO issues. Two of the most effective software are screaming frog and Mazda.

Off-Site SEO
Off-site SEO is how other websites or people consider your website over the Internet. Anytime someone talks about your site on any forum, give reference to your site, and links to your site – it is like tally or point for your page. To move higher on the search engine’s results, you need to get as many tallies or points as possible.

An off-site SEO is all about building links (also known as backlinks) that point back to your site. As a matter of fact, there are a number of off-site SEO methods. These methods are generally called link building because you build backlinks to your site. Some of these methods include but not limited to blog commenting, guest postings, and forum posting etc.

What should be the priority for your internet marketing? An on-site or off-site SEO strategy? Although you need to make sure that your site is good both in terms of on-site and off-site SEO, a good rule of thumb is to focus on off-site SEO first – specifically on the quality and quantity of backlinks. You can find a whole lot of mediocre sites in Google that rank pretty high because they have a massive number of backlinks.
